The Answer: Although there are numerous factors to be considered, if you stand under the apex  and find that you have a space of approximately 7’6” from the ridge to the ceiling joist, then it can be done. 7’6” is the height of a tall man with his arm raised. The Process We will handle the whole process from drawing up plans to dealing with applications for planning permission and building regulations. To give you an idea of how the project will be carried out see one of our recent loft conversions below: Example Dormer Conversion Erect scaffolding. Create opening in roof for access. Work is carried out from the outside of the property for the first 2-3 weeks to minimise inconvienence and dust. Steel beams are delivered and lifted into place. With these beams we will create the suspended floor. We will then have the first visit arranged for the building inspector to approve our floor construction. We then move onto the dormer in week 3-4, erecting the dormer and making it water tight for inspection by the building inspector.All internal partitions and insulations to meet building regulations are carried out. Tiling of the new dormer begins in week 4 along with breaking through the ceiling to create a new staircase. Electrical, plumbing and all internal partitions and insulations are carried out to meet building regulations. After these have taken place we will be into week 5-8, when plastering, woodwork, painting, electrical and plumbing will all be completed ready for final inspection typically by the end of week 8.
